I Walk Along the Golden Way

I walk along the golden way,
Listening to what the gulls say.
My head is bent as I search
Among the shells of nature's church,
And scattered in with those broken,
A blackened tooth becomes a token,
Which from the sand I carefully pluck—
Smiling at my good luck!
Up towards the bright blue sky
With my hand I shade my eyes;
I watch the silly white puffs glide
Across the great dome and try to hide
The gold king from the world's view,
But too thin were they and he shone through.
Great beams of light reflected off
the turquoise waters of the gulf.
Rumbling softly to their private song,
The foam rushes up the shore — short and long.
Along the beach they dance all day.
Oh, if only I could stay
And join in the humble peace!
But late it grows and my joy must cease;
Far, far from the water's coast I must fly,
But never will my memory die
Of the tranquil day spent at the bay!!
